White Balance by Ainslie Paton

ImageThis book tore me apart. Halfway through I wanted to fling myself off a bridge. I wrote to the author and told her so. She encouraged me to keep reading and I did.

Am I glad I did. It’s a gut-wrenching book, and it’s hard on the emotions – you’ve been warned.

Ainslie Paton writes with an honesty that hits you in the teeth. It can be brutal. It can be beautiful.

This guy’s depressed because he lost his wife. I’m not telling you how or why. This photographer woman’s boyfriend left her after he took care of her following a serious operation. They meet. And then the book explodes, and you think how much can this guy take? How much can I take?

The writing is sublime, the story is intricate and detailed and the characters are so well-developed it’s uncanny.

I recommend this book whole-heartedly.

And if you’re wondering if it ends well, let’s just say I didn’t feel like flinging myself off a building when I was through.
